I wanted to take time to make a separate blog about the sewing box I have for my independent-learning project. It means so much to me that I felt it was important to highlight this week. It is the sole reason why I am pursuing sewing. I will do my independent learning project progress later in the week but this deserved it’s own blog, in my opinion.
Here is the beauty…

This sewing box was my grandma’s who passed away 2 years ago. The bond between us was so strong. She was the one who picked me up every day from school, made me a bologna sandwich, and let me watch my favorite after school shows. My parents would pick me up from my grandma’s at 5:30 p.m. so I was with her for at least 2 hours after school each day until I was able to drive myself. Now looking back that time was so precious. I learned so many life lessons with her.
So, my sewing box is extremely sentimental to me. On my birthday when my parents gave me my brand new, shiny sewing machine my mom also gave me the sewing box (which she had to glue back together because it has been used for years to make clothes, blankets, afghans, repairs, dolls, etc.) and I promised her that I would keep it forever & pass it on to my daughter when she was ready to learn.
This sewing box is a reminder that even when I have days and weeks when I fail over & over that I need to keep trying, keep up the hard work & push to achieve my small goals so I can get to work on the big ones I have in store. My grandma was an amazing lady who had extreme perseverance, compassion, knowledge, and love. And this may seem like overboard for a sewing box but it’s just the inspiration that I need. There is always laundry, meal planning, exercise, cleaning, homework, reading, etc. to do but it’s important that I take time to dive in deep to this independent-learning project because it’s specific time set aside each week to pursue what I want to learn. It’s an amazing opportunity & this sewing box is my drive. I want to be able to show my daughter someday that this box has been used for at least 3 generations if not more.
So, to end this post, this is going to be my inspiration & this quote just sums it up perfectly.

I find this post so amazing and inspirational. I’m so glad you made the choice to dedicate one blog post specifically to your sewing box. I think this project will become one that you will treasure for years and years to come. It will be a never ending learning process for you. I hope that you do pass the sewing box down to your daughter along with some things that you have learned through this project. I think that you will also so much more about yourself through this learning process. I am looking forward to your future posts!
I find this post amazing and it definitely brought tears to my eyes. I love that it was from your grandma! Everything my grandma has ever gave me I still have and will forever because it makes me feel like she is near me. I have a comforter that I need to put some fabric over because it is falling apart but it is almost 20 years old. Great blog!
It’s amazing how things like that become so sentimental, huh! I hope grandmothers know how much they mean to their grandchildren.

Thanks! Sometimes I need the motivation when life seems to get too busy & it gets pushed to the back burner.
I think it’s great that you’re following your heart with your independent learning project, instead of choosing some cliched route that you feel obligated to follow. Familial roots run deeper than anything else, and I think that, even though your grandma has passed, you’ll discover a new connection with her through practicing the hobby that she had mastered. I’m excited to hear how this goes for you, because I think that this will genuinely mean a lot to you, and I’m super excited to read the rest of your blogs! 🙂
Thanks! It does mean a lot to me. I struggle devoting 2 hours a week to sewing but I want to do it with a real heart for learning in memory of my sweet grandmother.
What a wonderful sentiment behind a simple sewing box! I have many talented stitchers in my family, so of course I’ve seen similar sewing boxes. I never thought of it as a keepsake until now. Thanks for sharing your story!
You’re welcome– It is one of the few things that I got from my grandma. My grandma actually gave it to my mom and my mom just gave it to me so that means so much. She gave up her keepsake so I could hold it dear to my heart. I love it!
